Activating ePrescribe

Before you can use ePrescribe, you must activate it to interface with Dentrix, enroll with Veradigm, and sign up with ID.me. Once done, you can begin the process of creating and sending electronic prescriptions.

Key Information

  • If you do not have your Dentrix License Key, contact Dentrix Support for assistance.
  • An ePrescribe user can be a provider (doctor), someone who can prescribe-on-behalf (POB) of a doctor, or another type of staff member. POB users can prepare controlled substance prescriptions (for doctors to complete later) and prescribe non-controlled substances.
  • You can have more than one user assigned as an administrator in ePrescribe. This is beneficial as administrators can reset other user's passwords if needed.
  • Once providers are uploaded to ePrescribe, they cannot be removed; however, they can be disabled in ePrescribe.
  • If the user already has a Veradigm account (e.g., through a previous dental practice), they should select Link Accounts and follow the directions to link their Veradigm account to their new practice. There can only be one Veradigm account for each user.
  • If the user is designated as a Doctor, they must download the ID.me Authenticator app to their smartphone (or tablet) and complete the ID proofing verification process with ID.me. If the user is a POB or staff member, they do not need ID.me.
  • The ID.me Authenticator app generates a code that “authenticates” you in ePrescribe as the doctor creating a prescription for a controlled substance. You cannot prescribe a controlled substance without the code from ID.me.
  • For more information about the ID.me Authenticator app, click here.

Setting ePrescribe Demographics

Would you want to enter a patient's contact information, allergy(s), medical condition(s), and preferred pharmacies every time you need to create an electronic prescription for them? With ePrescribe, you only need to enter this information once (and modify it when changes are required), and ePrescribe will remember it for every ePrescription you create for that patient moving forward.

Key Information

  • It's good practice to include the patient's allergies and medical conditions, as ePrescribe reconciles these with their prescribed medications to warn you of any known drug interactions.
  • After you have discussed and confirmed with the patient that they don't have any known allergies, select No Known Allergies. If this field is left as "None entered," it leaves the allergy question open regarding whether the provider verified it with the patient.
  • ePrescribe will display several of the patient's active allergies; however, it may not display all of them on its homepage. To display all of the patient's allergies, click on the displayed allergies and note the allergies in their Act. (Active) Allergies list.
  • When a patient prefers a mail-order pharmacy, it's also good practice to assign them a local patient-preferred pharmacy so that the patient can pick up medications faster in urgent situations.

Creating Electronic Prescriptions

You can create and send prescriptions electronically to your patients’ favorite pharmacies. The process is straightforward, as it interfaces directly with Dentrix and streamlines the entire prescription process in ePrescribe.

  • In the Choose Sig screen, click Library – Admin & Dosage to open the Lexicomp® for Dentistry website. This site displays medical and dental information for the medication you want to prescribe.
  • Clicking Add to Script Pad adds the last prescription created to the electronic prescription pad, displays any warnings for all medications on the pad, processes the prescription(s), and then displays the current Script Pad — with all its prescriptions — for you to review and change if needed.
  • Clicking Add and Review adds the last prescription created to the electronic prescription pad, displays any warnings for all medications on the pad, processes the prescriptions, and then displays the current Script Pad — with all its prescriptions — for you to review and change if needed.
  • In addition to sending a prescription to a pharmacy, ePrescribe offers the following options:
    • Print the prescription and give it to the patient.
    • Have the prescription sent to an assistant to complete it.
    • Select Patient Reported to document a prescription in ePrescribe. For example, this prescription may have been phoned or faxed to a pharmacy.
