Expiring a patient's medical alerts

If a patient's medical alert (allergy or problem) is no longer applicable, you can mark it as expired. The expired medical alert remains in the patient's record but is inactive.

To expire a patient's medical alert

  1. If the correct patient is not already selected, use the Patient Search box to access the patient's record.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If the patient has any medical alerts, the Medical Alerts icon in between the Patient menu and the Patient Search box is a red plus sign. Click (or tap) the Medical Alerts icon.

      The Patient Information page opens with Medical Alerts/Medications selected on the navigation panel (on the left).

      Proceed to step 3.

    • If the patient's Overview page is not already open, on the Patient menu, under General, select Overview. The patient's Overview page opens. The Medical Alerts tab of the Medical Alerts/Medications box displays any medical alerts that have been entered for the patient. Select a medical alert.

      The Patient Information page opens with Medical Alerts/Medications selected on the navigation panel (on the left), and the Edit Medical Alert dialog box appears.

      Skip to step 4.

    • If the patient's Overview page is not already open, on the Patient menu, under General, select Overview. The patient's Overview page opens. Click (or tap) the Medical Alerts/Medications box.

      The Patient Information page opens with Medical Alerts/Medications selected on the navigation panel (on the left).

      Proceed to step 3.

    • On the Patient menu, under General, select Medical Alerts. The Patient Information page opens with Medical Alerts/Medications selected on the navigation panel (on the left).

      Proceed to step 3.

    • On the Patient menu, under General, select Patient Information. The patient's Patient Information page opens. Select Medical Alerts/Medications on the navigation panel (on the left).

      Proceed to step 3.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Expire a medical alert that is not marked as permanent:

      1. Click (or tap) a medical alert's Expire button.

        A Note box appears.

      2. Enter a note.

        Note: The note cannot be edited once you expire the medical alert.

      3. Click (or tap) Save & Expire.

    • Expire a medical alert that is marked as permanent:

      1. Click (or tap) a medical alert.

        The Edit Medical Alert dialog box appears.

      2. Set the Is permanent switch to No to make the Expire button available.

      3. Click (or tap) Expire and then Save.

    • Expire a medical alert when attempting to delete it:

      1. Click (or tap) a medical alert.

        The Edit Medical Alert dialog box appears.

      2. Click (or tap) Delete.

      3. On the confirmation message that appears, click (or tap) Expire.

Note: You can view expired medical alerts in the Medical Alerts/Medications section of a patient's Patient Information page by setting the medical alert list's Show expired switch to On.
