Dentrix Enterprise Installation Guide

Installing or upgrading Dentrix Enterprise consists of setting up the server and client features of Dentrix Enterprise separately. You can obtain Dentrix Enterprise setup files by calling a technical support representative at 1-800-372-4346. The representative will assist you with downloading the files from a secure site.

Important notes

You can upgrade an existing installation of Dentrix Enterprise to version 11.0.43.xxx only if version 8.0.96.349 or later is installed.

Make sure your server and client computers comply with the system requirements.

Before you install

Prior to installing or upgrading Dentrix Enterprise, verify the following:

For a first-time installation of Dentrix Enterprise, your database server must be set up with an instance of Microsoft SQL Server that houses a Dentrix database. Having a test environment set up with a separate SQL instance and database is highly recommended.

For environments with multiple reporting servers for DXOne Reporting, companion databases must be configured on each reporting server before installing or upgrading Dentrix Enterprise.

The server and client tools for Microsoft SQL must be installed on the database server. The Microsoft SQL Server Client Connectivity tools should be installed not only on the server but on every computer with Dentrix Enterprise installed (clients, terminal servers, and Citrix servers).

The Microsoft Command Line Utilities 15 for SQL Server (SQLCMD 64-bit interface version 11.0 or later) must be installed on the server.

The Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server must be installed on the server.

A 64-bit alias must be set up in the SQL Server Configuration Manager on your server and client computers.

On your file server (which may also be your database server), all domain users must have full (read and write) access to a shared folder that contains files (such as documents and images) used by Dentrix Enterprise.

Have a backup and restore plan for all important databases.

To install Dentrix Enterprise, you must be signed in to Windows as a user with Administrator rights on the local computer or domain. Also, all users must have at least Power User rights to use Dentrix Enterprise.

Additional setup and maintenance is required for the interoperability of third-party software (such as a medical records program) with Dentrix Enterprise through an HL7 interface.

For IHS facilities only:

You must employ encryption to protect data at rest in the EDR SQL database. Enabling transparent data encryption (TDE) protects data at rest. Backup files are also protected. Notes:

TDE requires decryption after data is retrieved from the disk, which will slow down the server. Data in memory is not encrypted.

To restore the database from a backup, the certificate protecting the database encryption key must also be available, so you must maintain backups of the server certificates to prevent data loss.

You must employ encryption to protect data during transit by doing the following:

Enabling Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Refer to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/database-engine/configure-windows/enable-encrypted-connections-to-the-database-engine?view=sql-server-ver15. SSL requires some configuration changes on the SQL server.

Using Internet Protocol Security (IPSec). Refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPsec. IPSec does not require any configuration changes on the SQL server.

Each EDR site must establish procedures to monitor and manage sufficient storage capacity in order to reduce the likelihood of such capacity being exceeded and resulting in the potential loss or reduction of data. Also, it is necessary to implement configuration alerts for exceeding storage capacity according to IHS policy. For more information, refer to Database Maintenance Plan Recommendations.
