Adding prescriptions

You can enter a prescription into a patient's record.

Note: Adding prescriptions requires the "Patient Prescriptions, New" security right.

To add a prescription

In the Patient Prescription dialog box, click the New Prescription button .

If applicable, do one of the following:

If the Password - Patient Prescriptions, New dialog box appears, user verification has been assigned to the "Patient Prescriptions, New" task. Do one of the following:

If your user account has been granted the "Patient Prescriptions, New" security right, enter your credentials in the User ID and Password boxes, and then click OK.

If your user account has not been granted the "Patient Prescriptions, New" security right, have a user with permission temporarily override this restriction so you can add a prescription this one time. The overriding user enters his or her credentials in the User ID and Password boxes and then clicks OK.

If a message appears, informing you that you do not have rights to this operation, your user account has not been granted the "Patient Prescriptions, New" security right. To have a user with permission temporarily override this restriction so you can add a prescription this one time, do the following:

On the message, click Yes.

In the Password - Patient Prescriptions, New dialog box, the overriding user enters his or her credentials in the User ID and Password boxes and then clicks OK.

The New Patient Prescription dialog box appears.

Click the Description search button .

The Select Drug dialog box appears.

To search for a prescription template, do the following:

Under By, select one of the following options: Description, Drug Name, Brand, NDC #, RxNorm #, or Unique ID #.

In the Enter Drug box, enter the first or more characters of a description, drug name, brand, NDC code, RxNorm code, or unique ID.

Click the search button to view a list of matching prescription templates.

Select the correct prescription template.

Click Select.

In the New Patient Prescription dialog box, the Drug Name, Dosage Form, Brand Name, NDC #, RxNorm #, Unique ID # / Medispan # / First DataBank # (the label depends on a certain global setting), and Strength from the selected prescription template appear for your reference.

Customize any of the following options for the patient as needed:

Encounter # - Enter an encounter number, or click the search button  to search for and select one.

Over-The-Counter - Select or clear this checkbox to specify whether this is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug or not.

Controlled Substance - Select or clear this checkbox to specify whether this drug is a controlled substance or not.

Dosage - The amount and form (unit) of the drug to take at one time (for example, 1 Capsule). Enter the correct values in the Qty and Unit boxes.

Sig - The dosing instructions (up to 49 characters in length) for the patient to follow.

Note: To check the spelling of the text, click the Check Spelling button  (this button is available only if a certain preference setting has been enabled).

Drug Administered During Visit Only - Select or clear this checkbox to specify whether this drug was or will be administered only during the patient's visit or this drug was not or will not be administered during the visit.

Duration - The number of days, weeks, or months from the issued date that this prescription is valid. Select Day, Week, or Month from the list, and enter the number of days, weeks, or months (up to three digits in length).

Route -The way that the drug is taken or administered. You can customize the order of the items in this list.

Disp - The amount of the drug to dispense.

Disp Unit - The form (unit) of the drug to dispense.

Refills - The number of refills (up to 10 digits in length) that are allowed.

Dispense as Written / Generic Substitution Permitted - Select either option to specify whether the drug must be dispensed as written or a generic substitute can be dispensed by the pharmacy.

Enrolled in Auto-Refill (For electronic Rx only) - If you have purchased the ePrescribe add-on, either select this checkbox to allow this prescription to be refilled automatically by the pharmacy when the specified duration ends, or clear this checkbox to not enroll in automatic refills for this prescription.

Clinic - By default, the clinic that you are currently logged in to is selected, but you can assign a different clinic to the prescription. To select a clinic, do the following:

Click the search button .

The Select Clinic dialog box appears.

Note: If your user account has been granted the "View All Patients" security right for the Central clinic, the ID and name of all clinics appear in the list; otherwise, the ID and name of each clinic for which your user account has been granted the "My Clinics, View" security right (in the "Practice/Clinic Setup" category) appear in the list; however, if your user account has not been granted that right to any clinic, only the ID and name of the clinic that you are currently logged in to appear in the list.

In the list, select the correct clinic.

Click OK.

Notes - Any notes (up to 149 characters in length) regarding the prescription (patients will see this note). To check the spelling of the note text, click the Check Spelling button (this button is available only if a certain preference setting has been enabled).

Prescriber - By default, you are selected as the provider who is prescribing the drug, but you can assign someone else as the prescriber. To select a prescriber, do the following:

Click the search button .

The Select Provider dialog box appears.

Either leave the ID and Last Name boxes empty to get a list of all providers, or enter all or part of a provider's ID or last name in the ID or Last Name box, respectively, to search for a provider.

Under Search By, select one of the following options: This Clinic, to search for the provider in the clinic that you are currently logged in to; All Clinics, to search for the provider in all clinics; or My Clinics, to search for the provider in the clinics to which you have been granted the "My Clinics, Select Provider " security right.

Notes:

The All Clinics option is available only if your user account has been granted the "View All Providers" security right for the Central clinic and if your user account has not been granted the "My Clinics, Select Provider" security right for the clinic that you are currently logged in to.

The My Clinics option is available only if your user account has been granted the "My Clinics, Select Provider" security right for at least one clinic and if your user account has not been granted the "View All Providers" security right for the Central clinic.

Either select the All Providers option to include providers who are associated with clinics (and who have a Log On User ID), or select the In ApptBook option to include providers who have been set up in Appointment Book.

Click the search button .

The matching primary and secondary providers appear in the list.

Select the correct provider.

Click OK.

Do one of the following:

To save and print the prescription, click Print.

The prescription prints to the printer selected from Office Manager to print prescriptions; or, if a printer was set up from the Prescriptions Setup dialog box, the prescription prints to that printer.

Notes:

You can print or reprint the prescription at a later time.

Printing and reprinting prescriptions requires the "Patient Prescriptions, Print" security right.

To save the prescription, click Save. A message appears, asking if you want to print the prescription. Click Yes or No.

The prescription is added to the list of patient prescriptions in the Patient Prescription dialog box.

Note: If you have purchased ePrescribe, the prescription information will be available online. To open ePrescribe, click the Electronic Rx button .
