Submitting a referral through DDX

Typically, DDX (Digital Dental Exchange) is known for its ability to exchange dental lab case information between practice and lab, but it also has the ability to serve as electronic referral exchange between providers, including between general dentists and specialists. DDX integrates with Dentrix Ascend, so you can create a referral through the DDX website with basic patient information that is passed from Dentrix Ascend automatically.

Note: Submitting referral through DDX requires the "Send Referrals to DDX" security right.

Pre-requisite: A DDX account. If you do not already have an account, to create a DDX account, visit https://ddxdental.com/signup. You can specify the practice name, a username and password, and other practice or user information. Once the practice account has been created, a user can add more users within DDX by clicking the practice name in the upper right of the screen, go to Users, and add a new user from that screen.

  • It's important that you verify whether your practice already has a DDX account or not. To get an accurate picture of your referral information, all users in your practice need to be associated with the same "practice" in DDX.

  • You may want to consider having one DDX account per location for simplicity, but your organization can implement accounts to suit its needs.

  • DDX accounts are free for the dental practices who are sending referrals out to a specialist. However, it's a paid service for specialists who are receiving referrals.

To submit a referral

  1. You must already be logged in to DDX, so have Dentrix Ascend open on one tab of your web browser and DDX open on another tab. To log in to DDX, go to https://www.ddxdental.com/login.

  2. How to get there

    1. If the correct patient is not already selected, use the Patient Search box to access the patient's record.

      Note: You can include inactive patients in the search results by setting the Include inactive patients switch to On.

    2. Do one of the following:

      • On the Patient Information ribbon, click (or tap) the Edit Patient Information button . If the ribbon is not visible, click (or tap) the arrow button below the Patient Search box .

      • On the Patient menu, under General, click (or tap) Patient Information.

      The patient's Patient Information page opens.

    In Dentrix Ascend, on a patient's Patient Information page, select the Referrals tab.

  3. In the lower-right corner, click (or tap) Send Referral to DDX.

  4. In DDX, the Request A New Referral page opens. Select a specialist in the My Specialists list, or enter criteria to Find A Specialist. Then, click Use Specialist.

    The patient information from Dentrix Ascend (name, birth date, gender, chart number, primary phone number, and email address) appears automatically in the Patient Details fields of the referral.

  5. Complete the remaining portions of the form, such as Procedures and Notes, and then click Submit Referral.
