Patient Tax Report

The IRS allows people to deduct unreimbursed expenses for preventive care, treatment, surgeries, and dental and vision care as qualifying medical expenses. You may have patients who want to claim dental expenses on their tax returns and request your help in compiling a list of payments for this purpose.

If your office uses Dentrix Ascend Pay (which requires a Worldpay account with a valid merchant account ID for your location), Dentrix Ascend allows you to print a patient’s tax report on demand, simplifying the patient’s tax filing. The report provides a comprehensive list of payments (for any provider, in any location) and includes any accompanying voids or refunds. And if the guarantor has an email address on file, you can email the report directly to that person.

To view and print/email the report

  1. While viewing a guarantor's record, on the Patient menu, under Financial, select Tax Report.

    The Patient Tax Report dialog box appears.

  2. Under Report for, the guarantor and all patients who share that guarantor are listed. The checkbox for each person is selected by default, but you can clear the checkboxes of those who you do not want to include on the report.

  3. Under Date Range, select one of the following options:

    • Last Year - To include transactions in the previous calendar year.

    • Year to Date - To include transactions so far this year.

  4. Click (or tap) Generate.

    The report appears and displays the applicable payments. The payments appear in chronological order.

    Report details:

    • The name of the guarantor appears in the upper-left corner.

    • The location name, address, and phone number appear in the upper-right corner.

    • For each payment, the transaction date, patient name, provider name, service description, and amount appear.

    • The total amount of all payments on the report appears below the transaction list.

  5. Click (or tap) one of the following buttons:

    • Print as PDF - To generate a .pdf file of the report that you can then print and give to the patient. The report appears on a new browser tab.

    • Email to Patient - To generate a .pdf file of the report that Dentrix Ascend automatically attaches to an email message and sends to the guarantor's email address on file. A message appears when the email is composed and sent.

      Note: For this to work, an email address must already be entered in the guarantor's record.

        See the attached PDF for the history of your payments.
