Server and workstation concepts

To perform a successful installation, you should understand the difference between a server and a workstation.

Server

The server has a copy of the program installed and is where the database (all the patient, practice, and other data) is stored. OMSVision uses an Adaptive Server SQL Anywhere database engine, and the database file OMSVision uses is named dv.db, which is contained in the dvwin directory.

Install OMSVision on the server first. The database engine must be running and properly licensed on the server before installing OMSVision on the workstations.

Important: OMSVision requires SQL Anywhere version 16 or 17. If a SQL Anywhere version prior to version 16 is already installed, DO NOT attempt to install the OMSVision program. Contact the Customer Support department at (800) 323-3370, option 1.

Workstation

A workstation, also known as a client, has a copy of the program installed. The workstation is where you access the patient data stored on the server. The database engine on the server responds to requests from the workstations to send, update, create, and delete information in the database. In other words, workstations do not read and write data from the server; they send a request to the database engine to do it for them.

Additionally, each workstation has an ODBC component (an Open Database Connectivity component of Windows that allows your workstations to use standard, open-architecture databases) and database client software installed.

Once OMSVision has been installed or upgraded on the server, install OMSVision on each workstation.
