After submitting your patients' claims, insurance carriers will typically send you remittances in the form of Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) reports, which are electronic versions of the carrier's Explanation of Benefits (EOBs). EDS acts as the clearinghouse for claims and their ensuing ERAs. To post the ERAs — and their payments — to Open Dental, you must first receive them from EDS, and then AutoPost will post them to Open Dental for you.
Watch this video to learn how to receive ERAs from EDS and then import them to Open Dental with AutoPost. (Duration 1:11)
This video demonstrates functions in the EDS Bridge with data that originated in Open Dental. (Users must click the EDS Bridge button in Open Dental to access the EDS Bridge.)
Key Information
Before receiving and auto-posting ERAs, you should configure the Payer Setup and AutoPost settings in the EDS Bridge. Then, when AutoPost begins, it will use those settings to locate the patient and claims in Open Dental that match the date-of-service and procedure codes in the ERAs and post the payments — and any adjustments and write-offs — to Open Dental.
AutoPost will automatically place a note in the claim's note field for codes, adjustments, write-offs, etc.
You can sort the lists in the Open Remittances and Remittance Claims sections by clicking a column header. This may be useful if you only want to view and work with valid ERAs, specific payer or claim IDs, etc.
Refer to the following for remittances in the Open Remittances section:
VALID – Valid remittances are green, meaning that all claims associated with the remittance have been validated against the same claims in Open Dental. Only validated remittances can be auto-posted to Open Dental.
Partial – Partial remittances are yellow, meaning that one or more claims associated with the remittance could not be validated against the same claims in Open Dental. These remittances cannot be auto-posted to Open Dental until all invalid claims are validated.
INVALID – Invalid remittances are red, meaning that none of the claims associated with the remittance could be validated against the same claims in Open Dental. These remittances cannot be auto-posted to Open Dental until all claims are validated.
To edit a remittance, select the remittance, click the Edit ERA button, edit the remittance, and click Save.
To display and print a remittance with its associated claims, check the remittance's checkbox, select the View 835s button, and click Print. This can be useful if you need a hard copy to research the remittance.
Refer to the following for claims in the Remittance Claims section:
VALID – Valid claims are green, meaning their data matches the same claims in Open Dental and are ready to be auto-posted with their associated remittance.
INVALID – Invalid claims are red, meaning their data does not match the same claims in Open Dental. They cannot be auto-posted with their associated remittance until they match.
EDITED/ADJUSTED – Edited/adjusted claims are purple, meaning their data has been edited or adjusted to match the same claims in Open Dental. For instance, these claims were either green and needed adjusting or red and needed to be fixed. After being edited/adjusted, they are, in effect, valid, and ready to be auto-posted with their associated remittance.
To edit a claim before auto-posting its remittance to Open Dental, select the claim in the Remittance Claims section, click the Edit Claim button, edit the claim, and click Save.
To view and print a claim, select the remittance to which the claim belongs in the Open Remittances section. Then click the claim's ID in the Remittance Claims section and click Print. This can be useful if you need a hard copy to research the claim.
You can auto-post several ERAs at once by checking the PreValidation check-boxes (or the Select All checkbox) for more than one valid ERA and then clicking the Begin AutoPost button.
If an AutoPost batch of claims has a secondary claim that needs to be generated after its primary payment has been applied, AutoPost will change the status of the secondary claim in the EDS Bridge from Waiting to Send to Ready to Send. Then, when the secondary claim has been sent and received, AutoPost will post the secondary claim's payment(s).
To view the ERAs and claims that have been auto-posted, select the Batch Results tab.
If needed, you can import ERAs manually from EDS. To do so, refer to Importing ERAs Manually in EDS Help.
