Creating document templates using Word 2003

You can create a custom document template in Microsoft Word 2003® that can be merged from Dentrix Enterprise.

To create a custom document template using Word 2003

In Microsoft Word, open dtxlm99.doc. This document contains all of the merge fields that can be used for your letter, label, or card.

Note: To make sure that you are accessing the right document directory, in Office Manager, expand the Maintenance menu, point to Practice Setup, click Preferences, and then click the Paths tab. The Document Path box indicates where Dentrix Enterprise looks for your document templates to merge. Make sure that you work from that directory any time you want to add document templates.

Open dtxlm34.doc.

Save the document with a new name (to preserve the original document). The name can be no more than seven characters in length. Make sure that you save it in the correct directory. Do not change file name extension or add an extension to the file name.

Enter the text of the letter.

To delete a merge field from the document template, click it once to select it with a gray color, and then click and drag to select the whole merge field. You should only see a blue select, no gray. Next, press the Delete (or Del) key on your keyboard. The merge field is removed from the document.

When your text cursor is at a position in the document where you want to insert a merge field, view dtxlm99.doc, click the desired merge field to select it in gray, click and drag to select the whole merge field (you should only see a blue select, no gray), use Microsoft Word's copy functionality to copy the merge field to the Clipboard, go back to the letter template (the one you renamed from dtxlm34.doc), and use Microsoft Word's paste functionality to insert the merge field in the desired location.

Save the changes.

When setting up merge data for a document template in Dentrix Enterprise, the name of the document that you have created will go in the Merge Letter Template box of the Patient Report View dialog box.
