Dear Mr. and Mrs. Doe,

We were delighted to hear about the birth of your child.  Congratulations!

Our job is to be concerned about the dental health of your whole family—which now includes your brand new baby. That is why we would like to take this opportunity to alert you about "nursing bottle syndrome", a condition which is caused when babies and toddlers are allowed to go to sleep sucking a bottle of milk or juice. As the child sleeps, some of the liquid remains in the mouth which can cause tooth decay.

Dental hygiene should begin even before your baby's first teeth start to come up. We suggest that you clean the child's mouth with gauze pads. That way, you can be assured that when the teeth do come in, they'll be in a plaque-free environment.

You should continue to clean the newly erupted teeth with gauze pads until the child is eating solid food -- at which time a soft bristled toothbrush should be used.  If you drop by our office we will provide you with one.

And finally, we suggest that you schedule your child's first dental examination at age two-and-a-half.  As soon as we get additional information on your child we will update your records and provide you with a reminder at that time.

We hope that this information is helpful to you.  If you have any questions, please call us at any time.  And once again, congratulations!

Sincerely,

Dennis D. Davis, DDS
